This is the second year in a row that both tournaments have not been played after last year’s events were cancelled and for the first time since the Second World War both tournaments were not included in the Australian golf calendar. The ISPS Handa PGA Tour of Australasia and Golf Australia announced today that the Australian PGA Championship, originally scheduled for December 2-5 at Royal Queensland, has been rescheduled to January 13-16, 2022, with the Open on December 25th to 28th November. The Men’s Open has been the premier event in Victorian men’s golf since it was first played in Riversdale in 1957, when Australian golf legend Ossie Pickworth won the first title.
The Australian Golf Union was founded in 1898 and has held championships since 1899. By 1903, the club hosted the New South Wales amateur tournament and ran a 36-hole qualifying round as an open event with both professional and amateur participants. In 1958, it finally became an open event that brought together the best golfers from all over the country.
The 1905 tournament reunited at Royal Melbourne, with the Open and Amateur Championships decided by the 72-hole tournament itself. The stroke play was the first match of the Australian Open, won by British amateur Michael Scott with 315 points. Australia’s two most popular tournament venues have qualified to host the Australian Open in 2020 and 2022. Visit Victoria CEO Peter Bingeman said the 2020 and 2022 Australian Open have confirmed the state’s position as a premium golf destination. Golf Australia CEO James Sutherland paid tribute to the Victorian government for once again supporting the tournament in making racing possible again.
Georgia CEO Stephen Pitt thanked all clubs for their enthusiasm in the application process but is delighted to announce that Kingston Heath Golf Club will be hosting guests in 2020 and then Victoria Golf Club in 2022.
The Australian Golf Club, also based in Sydney, will host 2019, 2021 and 2023 games, with dates yet to be set for all subsequent years. The summer program includes the PGA Championship, three Webex Players Series tournaments, and the PGA Championship and State Opening Series.
